What is the Dark of The Grey about?
Set in the year 2035, The Dark of the Grey is a gripping, journal-style adventure that unfolds just as the world teeters on the edge of extra-terrestrial disclosure. What begins as a quiet life for Nathan Carlisle — a computer programmer living on a remote island north of Seattle — quickly unravels into a harrowing journey across a fractured America. Nate’s struggle with sleep paralysis leads him to uncover a disturbing truth, one that propels him into a quest to find his estranged father and uncover the mystery of his own existence.
Told through time-stamped entries and steeped in eerie, paranormal undercurrents, the story twists and turns through moments of isolation, revelation, and existential fear. What Nate discovers will challenge everything he thought he knew about the world and himself.

No pressure, but I'm bleeding out here.

Support the cause—and make sure I don't starve in a crumbling wasteland. This kit includes tins of mystery meat, crackers stamped with pre-collapse dates, and a canteen of questionable water. Nutritional value: debatable. Survival value: priceless.

Support the cause—and make sure I don't bleed out in a crumbling wasteland. This kit includes bandages salvaged from a derelict hospital, morphine vials stamped with pre-collapse dates, and a bloodstained field guide to “emergency amputation.” (You're welcome.)

Support the cause—and make sure I don't get lost in a crumbling wasteland. This crate includes a cracked compass, dusty gloves, and a survival manual written by people who probably didn't make it.

I've just finished it. It is perfect to the point that I finished it although I'm pressed on time my exams are close and I'm not ready yet but I couldn't help it I had to Finnish it. Everything about it was perfect the story the characters the time line the recording and sound effects. I just didn't want it to end haha. Looking forward to Ken's story. (spoiler!!!...... He was truly a great man)

*Earphones HIGHLY recommended* The Dark of the Grey is a masterfully orchestrated audio experience now streaming on Spoken—G.E. Perlin clearly invested as much care into the delivery as the story itself. Every sound effect lands with pinpoint timing (that bang synced to its own word is sublime), woven seamlessly into the narration rather than layered on top. You can feel the deliberate matching of sound and pace at every turn. The story dives into themes of extraterrestrials and sleep paralysis through intimate, journal‑entry–style narration, making you feel like an invasive witness to the protagonist’s unraveling mind. The pacing is steady, and the closing line of chapter one—“truth, in my experience, is more terrifying than fiction”—perfectly captures why I didn't want to stop listening. Grounded details amp up the psychological tension. Chapter breaks act as brief breathers, and the “voice‑in‑your‑head” effect is wildly effective at pulling you inside the main character’s thoughts. Character interplay is inventive and vividly realized, and the plot twists build and tighten rather than jolt. There’s a controlled chaos to the unraveling that makes this dark, intimate journey unforgettable. Touching on survival, psychology, conspiracy, the paranormal, and even faith, The Dark of the Grey is a tense listen—and a new classic in Spoken’s catalogue. Fully recommended.

"This audiobook kicks ass. I’ve listened to a ton of audiobooks and most of them are kinda boring. Great job. 13 hours sure went by fast. Looking forward to whatever you do next."
Who is G.E. Perlin?
I'm an author & artist
I'm G.E. Perlin — a writer, designer, and storyteller who's spent most of my life chasing ideas, making things, and trying to bring imagination into the real world. I've worked in tech, advertising, and creative industries for years, always drawn to the places where art and emotion meet. Whether it's motion design, illustration, or writing, I care about craft — about making things that feel like they mean something.
The Dark of the Grey is my first novel — a passion project I spent over six years writing and producing as a fully immersive audiobook, complete with voice actors, music, and sound design. I built it the way I wanted stories to feel when I was a kid: alive, cinematic, and real.
